Pencils

Our classroom currently is pencil-less. We have used the supply that the district provided and the students are running out of lead for their mechanical pencils. If you would like to donate a bag or two of #2 pencils, it would be greatly appreciated. I will sharpen them for the students to use.

Weekly Newsletter 2-1-12

Dear Parents and Students,

The next round of Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on  Tuesday, February 7, 2012 from 5:00-8:00p.m. I look forward to meeting with you about your child’s progress during second quarter.

Valentine Dance forms (pink) are due by Friday, February 3, 2012. If you and your child would like to attend, please return the pink slip and money ASAP. Limited space available – no walk ups.

We are still  in need of gallon Ziploc bags, Clorox wipes, and tissues. If you are able to purchase any of these items for classroom use, please send them in with your child. Thanks for all of your support!

In math we have continued Units 7 and 9. Both units focus on multiplication and division. The test will cover how to solve multi-digit problems, along with word problems. We began testing multiplication facts for third quarter. Your child must score a 48 or above (out of 50) to be proficient.

In social studies, we continued learning about Changes in Time. Students have been studying timelines and what life was like 200 years ago. A test will be given next Tuesday, February 7, 2012. The study guide will come home on Friday of this week. ALL questions come from the study guide. Please help your child study for this test.

The next spelling test is this Friday, February 3, 2012. Students need to know how to spell each word and be able to write three sentences that I read aloud with a spelling word in it. To help your child study you can make flashcards or study them orally. It is important that your child studies nightly! Students who earn a 100% on the spelling test will receive a homework pass.

Dear Parents and Students,

Parent Teacher Conferences are approaching. These will be held on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 and Tuesday, February 7, 2012 from 5:00-8:00p.m. Please fill out and return the form that was in your child’s Wednesday folder as soon as possible. Thank you!

If you would like to order from the Book Club, please return forms and checks made payable to “Scholastic” by tomorrow Friday, January 20, 2012.

Your child must score a 48 or above (out of 50) to be proficient in subtraction facts. Starting next week, we will be testing multiplication facts.

In science, we finished our unit on Soil. Students took the test today. Grades will come home next week.

Weekly Newsletter 1-4-12

Dear Parents and Students,

I hope that you had a very relaxing holiday with family and friends. The students seem to be adjusting back to school and have remembered many of the classroom procedures learned prior to break. We have so much more to learn before April Testing. Please remind your child to be on their best behavior so that we can focus on learning and not on correcting misbehavior. It is going to be a great year!!

Thank you to everyone who donated goodies for the Holiday Party. The students had a great time and went home with a nice treat bag and a package of mechanical pencils!

In math we are finishing up Unit 6, which focuses on geometry. A Unit 6 TEST will be given next Wednesday, January 11, 2012.  Students are also taking timed subtraction tests this quarter. Your child must score a 48 or above (out of 50) to be proficient in subtraction facts. If your child has not passed, please practice with him/her. I will be re-testing on Friday.

In science, we are beginning a new unit on Soil. Students have learned how soil forms and about the different types of soil. We will be doing a few experiments with soil next week.

Weekly Newsletter 12-21-11

Dear Parents and Students,

I want to wish you a wonderful holiday season filled with family and friends. It’s hard to believe that the school year is almost half over! Have a great break – relax, play with the new toys, and remember to read a book!! I will see you in the New Year 2012!

The Classroom Holiday Party is scheduled for this Friday, December 23, 2011 from 1:50-2:50 p.m. Students will have treats and make a craft. We will also have a mechanical pencil exchange. If you have not already done so, please send in a wrapped package of mechanical pencils (no more than $5.00). The pencils should be plain, not gender specific since they are wrapped and we do not know who will be receiving them. Thanks for all of your help!

There are two Unit 2 Reading Tests in your child’s Wednesday Folder. These two tests were a culmination of everything learned over the past 5 weeks during literacy.

Graded Unit 5 Math Tests and Local Government Tests are also in the folder. Please sign and return as soon as possible. Thank you. Our next Unit in math focuses on geometry. We will begin a Soil Unit in Science after winter break.

There is no Spelling test this week; however, students are still responsible for turning in their nightly reading and fluency paper on Friday.

Dear Parents and Students,

The Classroom Holiday Party is scheduled for Friday, December 23, 2011 from 1:50-2:50 p.m. Students will have treats and make a craft. We will also have a mechanical pencil exchange. Refer to the handout in your child’s Wednesday folder. Please keep the cost to no more than $5.00 for the package of mechanical pencils. The wrapped pencils need to be brought in by Wednesday, December 21, 2011.  The pencils should also be plain not gender specific since they are wrapped and we do not know who will be receiving them.

The Unit 2 Reading Street Review began on Monday. Students have been reviewing vocabulary, phonics, and grammar from Unit 2. There will also be a comprehension test on Friday over previously learned skills. The students will read 2 stories and answer questions.

For math, students took the Unit 5 test today. Grades will come home next week. Students are also taking timed subtraction tests this quarter. Your child must score a 48 or above (out of 50) to be proficient in subtraction facts by the end of 2nd quarter.

In social studies, students will take a Local Government TEST tomorrow, Thursday, December 15, 2011.  Please help your child study. ALL of the test questions come from the study guide. NO SURPRISES!!

The Breakfast with Santa is this Saturday, December 10, 2011. There are 2 sessions. No Walk-Ups will be accepted. You must pay in advance. Thank you!

The study guide will come home on Monday. Please help your child study. ALL of the test questions come from the study guide. NO SURPRISES!!

Weekly Newsletter 11-21-11

Dear Parents and Students,

Scholastic Book orders will come home on Wednesday. If you would like to purchase books, please return the form(s) and check made payable to “Scholastic” by Friday, December 2, 2011 to ensure delivery for the holidays.

Last week’s reading tests will be coming home Wednesday. Grades are getting better; however, still need to improve. Please review the tests (especially the questions answered wrong) with your child. We will keep practicing in class every week, as well.

For math, students will begin Unit 5 after Thanksgiving break. Graded Unit 4 tests will come home on Wednesday. Students are also taking timed subtraction tests this quarter. Your child must score a 48 or above (out of 50) to be proficient in subtraction facts.

In science, we have finished our study of Rocks and Minerals. A TEST will be given Wednesday, November 23, 2011. The study guide will come home today. Please help your child study. ALL of the test questions come from the study guide. NO SURPRISES!!

There is NO Spelling homework or test this week!

Dear Parents and Students,

In science, we are coming to end of our study on Rocks and Minerals. We are going to do a science activity tomorrow on the Rock Cycle. The Rock Cycle is the process of how rocks are formed. Sedimentary rocks can change into Metamorphic or Igneous and vice versa. A TEST will be given next Wednesday, November 23, 2011. The study guide will come home on Monday. Please help your child study. ALL of the test questions come from the study guide. NO SURPRISES!!

Weekly Newsletter 11-9-11

Dear Parents and Students,

There is NO SCHOOL on Friday, November 11, 2011 in honor of Veteran’s Day.

Students have been learning about Veteran’s Day this week through a variety of activities. We watched the changing of the guard at the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier” and a couple of other videos related to Veteran’s Day.

We have also been talking about Fairy Tales. Today, we compared and contrasted the well-known fairy tale The Three Little Pigs with another version called The True Story of the Three Little Pigs from the wolf’s point of view. 

Parent-Teacher conferences are scheduled for Tuesday, November 15, 2011 and Monday, November 21, 2011 from 5-8:00 p.m. Please return the forms sent home as soon as possible.

Your child must score a 48 or above (out of 50) to be proficient in subtraction facts. A Unit 5 TEST will be given next Thursday, November 17, 2011. A study guide will come home next week.
